2006 Faculty Development Workshops

GIS for Agriculture Decision Making

Wednesday, June 14, 2006 to Friday, June 16, 2006
Kirkwood Community College- Cedar Rapids, IA

For Instructors Only

Registration is Closed - Workshop Full

Description
This workshop is designed to build on last year’s GPS Data Collection workshop to answer the question “What do we do with this data?” In a progression of geospatial workshops sponsored by AgrowKnowledge, this workshop covers analysis and interpretative techniques that enhance decision making in agriculture. Off-computer activities are used to understand the techniques and on-computer activities provide actual experience in creating interpretative maps. Two optional activities are also available with this workshop: a preliminary day to cover prerequisite GIS skills and an afternoon session for those participants interested in hosting their own workshop or developing instructional material.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will

  • Gain an awareness for the importance of teaching geospatial decision making
  • Recognize precision farming as a management/decision-making system
  • Describe analysis techniques in GIS that are useful for agriculture
  • Describe interpretative maps and charts useful in agriculture
  • Create a suitability map
  • Complete a zonal statistics chart

Outcomes
Participants will integrate concepts learned at the workshop resulting in:

  • Greater understanding of the decision making process by students
  • Enhanced math and statistics skills of students

Prerequisite knowledge
Participants should have a base of knowledge to attend this workshop. Without this base of knowledge, you may not get the full benefit of this workshop. If you do not feel comfortable with the concepts listed below, please consider participating in the optional preliminary workshop day being offered.

  • GPS Data Collection
    • Define attributes for field data collection
    • Recognize the process for collecting data and building a project for analysis
  • GIS ArcView
    • Data formats, difference between raster and vector

      • View shapefiles
      • Move folders and shapefiles between file locations
    • ArcMap
      • Add and Display map layers
      • Change symbology
      • View an attribute table
      • Query/select by location or attribute
