Many countries in Europe have been producing, and utilizing Miscanthus for biomass energy for more than ten years. Although they are looking at large power plant projects, there are many producers growing Miscanthus for use in their communities, farms and homes. We can adapt much of what they have learned to our farms in the Midwest. Eric Rund of RUND FARMS | INTERNATIONAL AGTIVITIES produces seed corn, food grade corn, and seed beans on 775 acres in East Central Illinois. The past three years his operation has been experimenting with biomass crops. Eric traveled to Europe last February to learn how farmers there are producing and marketing a highly productive perennial grass Miscanthus Giganteus. What he learned has changed his focus on how we and other Midwest farmers can participate in this new market.

Introduction to Global Positioning Systems Webinar

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM CST

Today’s high tech world is seeing the application of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in a multitude of ways from cell phones for driving directions to tracking the movement of equipment to auto-steer tractors. It is becoming essential that today’s society understand and know how to use GPS. The objective of the Introduction to GPS webinar is to help students understand the basic elements of GPS, GPS error, and methods for correcting GPS error. The first section will cover the basic elements of GPS which include how GPS determines location, what a GPS can measure, and the three segments of GPS (control, space, and user). The second section of the webinar will focus on types and causes of error in GPS determined location. The types of error that will be discussed include poor satellite visibility, atmospheric interference, and multipath error. The final section will discuss methods for correcting or minimizing GPS location error and will include some current products on the market that can minimize location error. At the conclusion of the webinar, the student will have a good understanding of GPS and its capabilities.

Introduction to Geographic Information Systems

Tuesday, December 8, 2009

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

CST Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have revolutionized our transportation systems, urban and rural planning, and agricultural management by making them more efficient. Additionally, most people have used a GIS, and do not even know it. For example, have you ever looked up driving directions online or used Google Earth to look at your house; if so, you have used a GIS. The objective of the Introduction to GIS webinar is to help students understand four basic areas of GIS including: what is GIS, object representation, data structure, and GIS capabilities. The object representation section will discuss how real world objects are represented as features in a GIS. Data structure will introduce vector and raster data, and how these data structure work. The GIS capabilities section will introduce different methods for analyzing and manipulating mapped (spatial) data such as querying data, creating buffer zones, and joining spatial data. At the conclusion of the webinar, the student will have a good understand of GIS and its capabilities.
